Before/After School Programs

Luchando por una Infancia Feliz y con Esperanza (L.I.F.E.) Argentina- provides children´s art classes, homework help and organizes sporting activities in low income neighborhoods in Capital Federal and the Province of Buenos Aires

Time Commitment: Runs from Monday-Saturday, generally held in the afternoon

Spanish Level Required: Basic

Cost: Regular volunteers (1-14 days = $25, 15< days = $50, internship = $100), some transportation costs (depends on how many students are going, Pepperdine can possibly pay for transportation)

Other: Must have an orientation interview before you can start volunteering

La Casita- a before/after school program for children that provides a snack and activities while the parents are at work

Time Commitment: Thursday mornings, meet at Casa Holden at 8:30am

Spanish Level Required: Basic

Other: Limit of 8 volunteers (have to sign up on sheet at Convo), can take a musical instrument to play with the kids

Hospital de Niños- make food and read to the kids in the hospital

Time Commitment: Thursday nights, meet at Casa Holden at 7:30pm

Spanish Level Required: Basic

Other: Limit of 25 volunteers (have to sign up on sheet at Convo)

Constuction/Housing

Un Techo Para Mi Pais (UTPMP)- Organization dedicated to providing emergency housing to those living in extreme poverty and is now expanding offerings to include community development projects and microloans. UTPMP is found in 15 Latin American countries. 

Time Commitment: Massive construction at the end of October (tentative dates = Friday October 30- Sunday November 1)

Spanish Level Required: Intermediate

Habitat para la Humanidad- An organization committed to human and community development, working with families who live in poverty housing, and helping them to overcome their personal housing problems

Time Commitment: generally a period of 3 months (something to consider for next semester)

Spanish Level Required: Intermediate

Adulam- a rural community in which Pepperdine is involved in community development projects and microloans for local people to start businesses

Time Commitment: can be an overnight trip (Saturday)

Spanish Level required: Intermediate

Other: Pepperdine pays for transportation to/from Adulam, minimum of 2 students and maximum of 4 or 5

Soup Kitchen

Noche de la Caridad- an initiative by local churches that provides food and beverages to homeless individuals and families. Meets at a church in Recoleta (Coronel Diaz and Juncal) and makes a circuit giving out food and talking to those living on the streets.

Time Commitment: Meets every Monday night at 10pm, lasts approximately 1-1.5 hours

Spanish Level Required: Minimal

“Comedor de Niños” Madres de Constitución- offers a place where people living in the Constitución neighborhood can eat and children can study and do their homework. The most important activity for them now is to find people who help collecting the food they offer to those in need, specifically pasta, oil, tomato sauce and milk. 

Time Commitment: They are planning an event for Mother’s Day (October 18th) and need volunteers to assist during the event.
